Every website has a robots.txt; this gives robots/crawlers/spiders a bunch of rules to follow, such as where they can/can’t crawl, and the pages they can/can’t index. You can check whether a URL is blocked by robots.txt with Google’s Robots Testing Tool. There are hundreds of different ranking factors that search engines, like Google, consider as part of their algorithm when deciding what results to return for a given search query. Think of the last time you wanted to purchase a product but knew next to nothing about it. What did you do? You likely used a search engine to look for online reviews or articles about the product. If the most helpful article was on a site that also sold the product, odds are that you purchased at that site. If your content is hard to scan, meaning it contains long sentences and paragraphs, it's likely that your visitors won’t stick around. Chances are, they’ll go to your competitors to find content that’s easier to consume.

How does web design and development affect marketing?

It’s no secret that search engines have changed the way we search, find, and do business online. They seem to magically sort through countless web pages, find answers to your questions, and deliver results to your searches in a snap. But how do they do it? By using a few complex steps to deliver results that answer or match your search: Crawling, indexing, ranking and delivering. SEOs have a weird way to describe this voting process; they call it “link juice.” If an authoritative site, we’ll say Wikipedia for example, links to you, they’re passing you “link juice.” It is worth noting that when it comes to link building, it is very difficult to find a site owner willing to give you a link freely. Usually you give something back in return. Build trust and engagement. Build these through the aforementioned speed, plus content that speaks to their needs. The combination of those two things also makes your site mobile-friendly, so they get a good experience on any of their devices.

Why it’s important to use the right anchor text

So what it does it take to achieve a high ranking on Google? There have been many minor changes to the layout of Search Engine Results Pages. Local and more location-specific searches have become more commonplace — especially on mobile devices. An effective link building strategy that simply makes a lot of sense is fixing broken links on your site and on sites that you’d like a link from. Your first step is to look for broken links on pages that interest you. After finding the links that go to pages that no longer exist, you reach out to the website owner and point out the link and suggest a new page that could provide value to their audience. Search engine optimization, while a very technical practice, is a marketing function—and it needs to be treated like one.

Information Architecture allows people and search engines to better understand the content structure on a site. After Google’s Exact Match Domain update, the importance of having the exact keyword in your domain name is far less important. Try to pick the best available domain name first & consider keyword matching/partial inclusion as a bonus but entirely unnecessary aspect of your final choice. Very much a nice to have not a need to have… Search drives the web -- roughly two-thirds of website visitors originate from organic search. According to Gaz Hall, a UK SEO Consultant : "SEO factors have varying weights and no SEO consultant knows the exact weight of each or when these weights change. We’re not going to talk about every SEO factor. This is because Google has over 200 SEO factors and over 10,000 sub-signals for ranking. That is way too much information to digest and remember."

In addition to your user experience, there are also a number of other factors that affect the usability of your website such as website load speed, server uptime, broken links, cross-device compatibility, learnability and clarity. By making sure your website is easy to use you’ll be helping to ensure that it can perform well in the search engines and will also help to convert your visitors into customers. But SEO is also not a one-and-done activity. You can’t SEO a website and call it good. If you want to stay competitive, then SEO shouldn’t stop just because you’ve started seeing results. You may not want certain pages of your site crawled because they might not be useful to users if found in a search engine's search results.
